Friends and fishing....

Downtown Comox
8/5/14  Comox is a great little town… we wandered the streets yesterday and set up on the front deck to watch the fireworks for BC day. What a welcome, and what a pleasant evening.
Oh..... ah......

Latest selfie....watching fireworks

This morning, it’s on to Heriot Bay on Quadra Island.  We had “issues” with our sanitation system.  In the US, the boating community has the requirement (by law) of putting all sewage into a holding tank on the boat. It is to be pumped out at designated stations found on most docks and marinas.  In Canada, it’s a different story…. There are very few pump out stations and the protocol is to discharge sewage into the water when you are in areas other than harbors or marinas.  So, when we tried to discharge, nothing happened.  In a couple of days we will have 4 on board and this system HAS to work or we aren’t going anywhere.   We tried to get a slip in Campbell River and were not able to.  It’s full up, but Fisherman’s Wharf said the fishing fleet is leaving in the morning so we got a slip for the following day.

In the meantime, Heriot Bay was a pleasant stop and we can now see the mountains in Desolation Sound….. we’re here!

We're here!

8/6/14  We headed out of Heriot Bay very early in the morning as we wanted to arrive in Campbell River close to slack tide.  It was beautiful with the mountains peeking out of a few clouds.  Now, around Mudge Point (on Quadra) and into Campbell River we go.  There were fishing boats everywhere!

We found a local repairman who had time to come take a look at the problem with our sanitation system.  It seems that our local boat yard, hooked up lines backwards when we had them replace all of our sanitation lines in February!  The pump was sending everything back into the tank rather than overboard.  Darcy fixed us up and now we are ready for a little laundry and cleaning before Gary & Tammy arrive tomorrow.
Fishing nets hauling salmon in

Oh yeah, did we mention that Campbell River has a few fishermen and they are catching an abundance of Sockeye currently?  They claim that the fish are choking the river (Campbell River that is).  We began looking around and everyone in town has a HUGE bucket of fish.  Not really a bucket, more like a small storage shed! We really enjoyed being on Fisherman’s Wharf as it’s a real working marina and we are one of the few pleasure boats here.  Fun to see what goes on….

And in the meantime, another lovely dinner out, great views and wonderful evening with my guy...

and facing the other way. What a view

8/7/14  Gary and Tammy arrived at around noon.  They actually drove to meet me at the grocery store which was great…. I didn’t have to carry everything back to the boat.  I forget how much we rely on cars when we don’t have one available…. We bought a couple of fishing licenses, prawn traps, bait, lures, etc.  Ready for fishing!  Chris and Gary fished off of the public pier…. There were schools of salmon just swirling around. I’ve never seen anything like it.

We spent the evening at a waterfront restaurant on the deck just soaking up the view…. It’s LOVELY!  The weather is still beautiful…. Sunny and warm.  And now, we have good friends to share these beautiful places with.
Getting ready to head out

8/8/14 We left at about 10:30 from Campbell River and are heading to Gorge Harbour.  Gary tried his hand at fishing off of the boat.  As he said, he was “fishing today, not catching ”.  He got a couple of hits and thought we had one, but it got away.  They were jumping everywhere.
Fishing....

More fishing.....

Ahhhh..... relaxation at it's finest

It was a beautiful and relaxing cruise over to Gorge Harbor.  This spot is magnificent.  Time to get the kayaks down and go for a little cruise before dinner.  Oh yeah, we met up with Leonard and Lorena today.  They are anchored in Gorge Harbour.  It’s such a small little boating world. They arrived after dinner and brought dessert for us all.  What a treat to see them out on the water and have some time to catch up on their boating plans!  Our idols :-)
